Capricorn-Aquarius: similarities and differences
by Richard Pellard
English translation by Julien Rouger

The interpretation examples that we are suggesting are very far from being exhaustive: they only show and outline a general frame describing the problematics of both Signs. They should therefore not be taken literally. Each being brings indeed its own responses, more or less original, to the issues raised by a Sign. Through combining logic, observation and imagination, you will be able to develop a thousand other possible meanings, a thousand other variations on the same theme.

It’s possible that your Sun Sign is not dominant in your birth chart. One can for instance be born under the Aries Sign while the most valorized Sign is actually Taurus. In this case, it will probably be difficult for you to recognize yourself in the interpretations that are offered to you below. You will have to refer to the interpretations corresponding to your actual dominant Sign in order to relate to these. Adapted Capricorn and Aquarius

S−S+

Difference Capricorn-Aquarius: Inhibition strength versus Excitation strength

S−Eliminating Inhibition strength for Capricorn: the impassive. Nighttime, still dominant, is from now on decreasing: of all the things one acquired, one only preserves what is strictly necessary. One therefore radically loses interest in the outside world and its stimulations, one stays cool, stone-faced, unmoved; one distances oneself from anything secondary, relative, factual. One tunes out the world in order to exclusively dedicate oneself to what one reckons to be the essential, the absolute, the most important. Power of oblivion and detachment; elimination, boycott, impassiveness.

S+Recreating Excitation strength for Aquarius: the reformer. One reacts against oblivion, disillusionment, disinterest; one refuses paralysis and renunciation: reinventing and transforming oneself, rejuvenating, being born again; renewing one’s point of view, looking at things from an unprecedented perspective, telling oneself that nothing is ever lost for good, that hope is still possible; opening up closed structures, dusting off the ways of being, thinking or feeling, etc.

Difference Capricorn-Aquarius: No induction versus Positive induction

PIPositive induction for Aquarius: the full-of-hope. The eliminating Inhibition focuses onto a narrow field: one forgets the negative, the past, one banishes once and for all any dead values, any disenchantment, any incitement to pessimism. Thus immune to any germ of despair, one can build a brighter future, one can be sensitive to promises, to rising seeds, to optimistic perspectives.

Sl−

Similarity Capricorn-Aquarius: Inhibition slowness

Sl−Inhibition slowness for Capricorn: the Sphinx. Defence reactions are slow, persistent, persevering: shielding, bunker, systematic refusal. Habits and monolithic principles keep the heart of hearts safe from the fluctuations of beings, things and situations. Endurance, tenacity, patience, hermetism, sense of strategy, extreme rigor, abstemiousness, method, soundness, dryness. Development of an intuition that focuses on abstract structures.

Sl−Inhibition slowness for Aquarius: the visionary. The Aquarius remains open and receptive, no matter what, thanks to some monolithic, locked, immutable defence systems. He knows how to take shelter from the outside world, which he’s basing all his hopes on. An optimistic but not a fool, he reckons that his resurrection ventures will be all the more efficient that he’ll himself be stoical and steadfast in the face of adversity, not giving any ground to the others: there’s no way that his intuition of new possibilities in the making gets diverted by the ebb and flow of circumstances.

SSSP

Difference Capricorn-Aquarius: Sense of syntheses versus Sense of proportions

SSSense of syntheses for Capricorn: the legist. Quest for the fundamental matrix, the invisible framework, the absolute structure. Everything must fit within a very high architectural, mechanical or metaphysical precision and cohesion. The perfect puzzle, without any gaps between the elements. The inner principles of functioning of the society, of the cosmos or of the individual. Need to be fundamentally oneself, properly built, well-ordered, each facet of the being in its place, rigorously fitted to and articulated with the others. Abstract humanism: may each one be a humble and tight-fitting cog of the Whole, and everything will be fine. Integrity, respect for the necessary Order, strict compliance to the rules.

SPSense of proportions for Aquarius: the inventive. The Sense of syntheses gives way to the Sense of proportions: it’s about an abstract unity that must be dissociated and concretized through choices. One is in search of original alliances and unprecedented proportions between the enthusiastic promotion of impersonal causes and the protection of individual freedom. One wants to show some solidarity while keeping one’s room for manoeuvre, one wants to counterbalance optimism with a lucidity devoid of illusions. One strikes an efficient balance between prospective imagination and rigor, between perseverance and immediate opening to novelty. One is seeking domination in the name of abstract values so as to better free the other from past servitudes.

Unadapted Capricorn and Aquarius

Difference Capricorn-Aquarius: Excitation weakness versus Inhibition weakness

w+Expending Excitation weakness for Capricorn: the disillusioned. No spontaneity, no vital impulse, no healthy animal aggressivity, no initiative: one can’t take action or assert oneself openly. Tiredness, asthenia, prostration, staying in the background, depreciating self-criticism, feeling of powerlessness, general lack of interest, inability to respond opportunely to external stimulations, pathological indifference, repression of affect, expressionlessness, incommunicability.

w−Recovering Inhibition weakness for Aquarius: the bottomless pit. One can’t take a break in order to cool off, to have some rest, to recover: feverish excitement, exhausting bustle. One doesn’t put down any roots, one isn’t able to use one’s natural environment for thriving, for saving one’s strength. One pushes oneself too hard: no resistance, no stability, no practical interests. Prodigality, thoughtlessness, lack of foresight, lack of animal prudence. The grasshopper from the fable, the rolling stone, the absence of solid foundation.

q+

Similarity Capricorn-Aquarius: Unadapted Excitation quickness

q+Unadapted Excitation quickness for Capricorn: the maniac. Difficulties to operate the accelerator, to start up. In the event of an impossible startup, it’s an absolute stagnation, a total inactivity that hides an intense inner febricity that can’t or won’t manifest itself. In the event of an inadvertent startup, one gets excited for very little, one gets exhilarated by fantasy perfunctory attempts at action: tiresome teasing, mischiefs, short attacks of nervousness, of volatile and temperamental mood, after which one slips back into a disillusioned prostration.

q+Unadapted Excitation quickness for Aquarius: the restless. With the Inhibition weakness, it’s expressed with great ease: brisk, unexpected, unpredictable reactions; rollercoaster mood swings, euphoric exaltations for no reason, inopportune improvisations, attraction for scandals, going overboard, abrupt segues, slip-ups, pathological cyclothymia; perfunctory attempts to take actions that fizzle out, constant fantasia, quick comprehension or fickle feelings that don’t leave any trace afterwards.

UPPP

Difference Capricorn-Aquarius: Ultraparadoxical phase versus Paradoxical phase

UPUltraparadoxical phase for Capricorn: the totalitarian. What’s normally stimulating becomes inhibiting: hostile reactions are triggered by going out, opening up, or approaching the unfamiliar. One isn’t excited by novelty, one is left cold by the best news. Caricatural composure, unmovable habits in the situations where a vigorous and immediate reaction would be preferable. Greed unadapated to the actual needs: the more disregard one has for what one doesn’t own, the more one craves for it. One becomes totally identified with the Law, the Rule, the Sacred, the Ethics, the Transcendent Cause; hence the risks of merciless fanaticism, of ice-cold passions where the individual completely forgets oneself in the service of an absolute for which he’s capable of sacrificing everything, including whatever and whoever is just minding one’s own business.

PPParadoxical phase for Aquarius: the unrealistic. One gives much prominence to what’s positive or promising, while playing down the realities that are negative, that incite pessimism or fatalism. A mere nothing is enough to discern anything wonderful, inspiring, extraordinary, unprecedented or marvellous, where others would just see something very commonplace and usual. Thoughtless optimism, visionary imagination disconnected from practical realities; tendency to establish one’s domination over the others through the irrational, through colossal promises, puppet hopes, magic potions and miracle cures; through putting out smoke and mirrors. Mirages and pixie dust.
